Sultan Knish: The Center for Jewish History's Jewish Problem (a trend that has infected too many educational and neutral Orgs)

The left modus operandi is to hijack neutral educational and cultural organizations by controlling the agenda and narrative by infiltrating the Organization in leadership positions and using the org as a platform to spread leftist and anti Israel lies, hate and Propaganda. The naive members of the Organization and Educational Institution are then brainwashed to believe the lies especially when the false narrative is then repeated non stop in the Fake News. This is done under the protective umbrella of free speech.

We see this also  in the Park Slope Food Coop in Brooklyn, whose agenda of eating organic and healthy has morphed to now focus on leftist ideology ...being anti Trump and pro BDS and pushing respect and acceptance of Islam and Sharia and in fighting Islamaphobia.  They advocate for welcoming migrants into our country who follow Islamic doctrine, individuals whose culture does not allow them to integrate let alone be submissive to Western Civilization which is guided by Judeo-Christian ethics and morality.

They indoctrinate clueless members of such Organizations and Institutions with anti Israel content and typically defame Jews who dare to live in their 3000 year old Biblical Homeland in Judea and Samaria..accusing Jewish settlers  of being illegal "Occupiers"

They encourage anti-Semitic and anti Zionist sentiment and suppress and bully any individuals who dares to express content that exposes them and brings out the Truth thereby keeping such individuals from gaining positions of leadership that might threaten their own.

The NFL seems to have been infected as well not to mention many college campuses all over the country.

Time to drain the swamp not only in Government.

Authentic Jewish Organizations and Leadership in such Organizations has been either infiltrated or suppressed. The only cure is to reverse that trend and not be too humble.

Police are not what is most dangerous to Black Americans as Black Lives Matters want them to believe.  The opposite is true as the Police are there to bring safety and stability to their neighborhoods as well as all neighborhoods.

BDS spreads lies that the IDF is evil and murders Palestinians.  The opposite is true.  The Palestinians living under Israel's sovereignty have it better than most Arabs in Arab countries.  Their education, medical services and life expectancy is better than most Arabs living in Arab countries.  The IDF is there to protect citizens of Israel from suicide bombers and acts of Jihad. Curruption and crime among the Arab population is coming from within rather than from Israel. Non Jews willing to live under Israeli Sovereignty and under the laws of the Land gain the most.  Unfortunately, their religion teaches them that non Muslims must be submissive to Islam and there lies the problem.

Today the truth was heard at the United Nations!

U.N. Clash: Son of Hamas Chief Calls PA ‘Enemy of the Palestinian People’

No wonder Black Lives Matter who advocates undermining enforcement officers of the United States of America partners with the likes of Linda Sarsour who doesn't seem to have a problem with imposing Sharia Law and Jihad.

But the Truth will eventually prevail!

Can We Count On You to Come? ACTION ALERT: PROTEST Wednesday 6-7:30pm 15 W 16th Street. CALL TO FIRE CEO of CENTER FOR JEWISH HISTORY BDS and Anti-Semitic Terror at the Center for Jewish History | Frontpage Mag

Protest At Center For Jewish History To Demand Firing Of Israel Boycotting CEO David Myers.

Americans for a Safe Israel/AFSI and JCC Watch will hold a demonstration at the Center for Jewish History Wednesday SEPTEMBER 27 to protest the hiring of David Myers as President and CEO of the CJH. The Center for Jewish History is located at 15 West 16th Street between 5th & 6th Avenues, NYC. The demonstration will take place from 6-7:30 PM. All those who are properly incensed by this betrayal of Jewish interests are invited to participate. Bring flags and signs.

Another demonstration is scheduled for October 18th.

This is a Chillul Hashem. Chillul comes from the Hebrew word for חלל void.

How did Jewish Orgs get hijacked? This happens when there is a void and Jews fail to  assert the Biblical Covenant  between G-d and our forefathers and the Jewish Nation.

This should be  a wakeup call to Major Jewish Orgs, Rabbis and Jewish Leadership. If we fail to claim G-d's precious gift to us the Jewish Nation others will steal and pervert our identity. ...David N. Myers did not end up in his position by accident. The defenses of his anti-Israel activism contend that we should ignore his political views because they have nothing to do with his position. But it's because of these views that he got the job and because of them that he will keep the job. Myers' appointment was not the beginning of a problem at the Center for Jewish History. It's just the most obvious symptom of a serious ongoing anti-Jewish crisis in Jewish Studies.

Question. Does the PSFC (Park Slope Food Coop) actually boycott Israel Products?

This is an addendum to the previous discussion of my last post entitled:

Amazing Video Made in Israel in Israel. Please Show in Park Slope Food Coop for Tips on Organic Farming. ABOLISH BDS for your own benefit!  Park Slope Food Coop is shooting themselves in the foot by Boycotting Israeli Products and by spreading lies and falsehoods....

a reader asked

Hi, Robin,

I was struck by the first line of your email.   Has the Coop actually instituted a boycott of Israeli products?  I'd understood that there have been members urging a boycott but that a boycott was never implemented.

If you'd let me know, I'd appreciate it.

Many thanks.

My answer:

Dear S,

Thanks for your comment and excellent question.

When you say "actually instituted a boycott" aren't you really asking "Has the Coop officially adopted a resolution, a formal legal declaration that they will boycott Israeli Products?"

The answer to this is of course they will never do so since it would be stupid on their part and legally they will be held accountable and prosecuted.

However, it seems to me that they are totally boycotting Israeli products in the PSFC.

Would you as a pro Israel lawyer argue that if they sell just 1 Israeli product it is proof that they are not engaging in any form of BDS whatsoever and that therefore they are protected under the law and can not be prosecuted for engaging in BDS?  And if they don't officially vote for BDS that means that there is none happening?

so yes to your question...It is my impression and conclusion that there is some kind of boycott going on in the Coop as there are very few Israeli products and a small quantity of Kosher products sold...far from what it should be. Of course this is just an allegation based on a gut feeling rather than on scientific evidence. I of course would welcome an investigation....

The impression many of us have is that their modus operandi  is to conduct an unofficial boycott without fear of prosecution or consequence  due to their engagement of deception and knowledge of lawfare.  Their success is that they know how to circumvent the spirit of the law by being masters in engaging in the letter of the law. Deception par excellence.   We can't fall for it.   Shall we justify their bias against purchasing Israeli products simply because they make sure to have just one or even a handful of Israeli products on the shelf rather than a full lineup of items?

Let me add that engaging in BDS also incorporates telling a false narrative which justifies economic Jihad against Israel not to mention justifies violent Jihad.  Linda Sarsour actually justifies Jihad and speaks of Jihad as if it is innocuous.  For whatever reason, in legal circles,  brainwashing with a false narrative is not considered legally problematic nor illegal nor acknowledged as part of BDS and is actually according to certain prestigious lawyers, "experts" in the field of BDS,  Freedom of Speech.  This in turn creates a very strange scenario where tax payer money is supporting Non for Profit anti Semitic propaganda and brainwashing all in the name of Freedom of Speech.

A digression...Another example of a non for profit organization, benefiting from public assistance, financial and otherwise, and  engaged in brainwashing,  is radio station WBAI.

WBAI Real Estate Dispute: Tom DiNapol. State Comptroller and Mayor DeBlasio interfering in a real estate dispute on behalf of a liberal, progressive, anti Zionist, Leftist, Anti Trump Radio Station WBAI

So the PSFC continues to engage in brainwashing and propaganda all protected by Freedom of Speech, which is by the way, in my humble opinion,  far worse and more dangerous than the actual boycotting of Israeli products.

As per your question is there an economic boycott happening in the PSFC...

Let us be fair to the PSFC and  compare the diversity of choice of Israeli products with what other supermarkets have on their shelf,  given the same market.

Of course one can argue that the Buyers in the PSFC are appointed or elected by the members to make such decisions and we shouldn't intervene nor question their decisions

Let me respond. The PSFC leadership, officers, committee heads etc.  has been successful, if my allegations are accurate,  in encouraging, aiding and abetting PSFC to engage in an unofficial BDS boycott.  This has been accomplished only because they have been successful in keeping Pro Israel, pro Judea and Samaria advocates from leadership positions in the PSFC. The time has come to drain the swamp and once and for all end perpetuating an anti Israel anti Judea and Samaria bias within the PSFC.

Let me digress if you may...

Please read their plan of Civilization Jihad which is to infiltrate political positions elected in a democratic fashion to push their agenda. This is how they operate in all sectors in the economy, be it political, non for profit and business.

Brigitte Gabriel exposes the Muslim Brotherhood like no other. Brilliant expose!

PSFC is only one manifestation.  The political support by DeBlasio, DeNapoli, Jummaine Williams, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for Linda Sarsour or for antisemitic anti Trump radio stations like WBAI shows us that we have some wolves as politicians guarding the hen house.

Going back to the topic at hand...

Does the PSFC offer any products labeled made in Judea and Samaria?  If not, does that officially fall under the category of BDS? It raises the important question Is Judea and Samaria  legitimate according to the PSFC?

It is my impression that according to the PSFC BDS narrative and agenda there is no legitimacy to Judea and Samaria. There is only legitimacy to "Palestine". Did the Coop ever honestly investigate and have an open discussion as per what "Palestine" is all about from a Biblical, historic and legal standpoint? They will probably refrain from doing so because of  the truth of what they will uncover.  They surely will circumvent any such discussion by saying that since they are a Food Coop they don't want to engage in politics. This is how they suppress the narrative when is inconveniently changes their agenda. The PSFC BDS has determined as fact to their now brainwashed membership, that Israel is an illegal Occupier of stolen Palestinian Land that this is what justifies BDS in the PSFC!

If however Judea and Samaria is indeed legitimate, then why not have products labeled "made in Judea and Samaria"?

The only way to truly determine if the PSFC are engaged in a full scale boycott is to investigate current purchasing practices and in addition place an officer or committee head who is pro Israel and pro Judea and Samaria in a leadership position in the purchasing dept of the  PSFC.  Let us then see if that makes a difference as per what gets on the shelves.

My allegation against the PSFC  is that at the present time, the leadership within the PSFC, those that makes such decisions,  do so in a biased manner to  support the "values of the PSFC" based on trumped up allegations of  "human rights violations of the oppressed Palestinian people" rather than on the quality of the Organic produce produced in Israel and farmed by Jewish residents living in the Biblical heartland of Israel, known as Judea and Samaria. .

Amazing Video Made in Israel in Israel. Please Show in Park Slope Food Coop for Tips on Organic Farming. ABOLISH BDS for your own benefit!

Dear Reader: You might be interested in further discussion and comments on this post of whether the PSFC engages in BDS or not. Please visit  this link:
Question. Does the PSFC (Park Slope Food Coop) actually boycott Israel Products?

Park Slope Food Coop is shooting themselves in the foot by Boycotting Israeli Products and by spreading lies and falsehoods.  The PSFC BDS falsely accuses Israel and the IDF for Israeli aggression, for murdering innocent Palestinians, for stealing and Occupying Palestinian Land and taking away Palestinian human rights. These arguments are used to justify Arab Aggression (terror)  and glorify Jihad.

Regarding the false accusations,  nothing is further from the truth.  Israel cares deeply about her environment, and cares about sharing her advances in agriculture with others. She has turned the desert into an oasis to make it bloom. She takes great pride in teaching others how to do the same.  Israel is in the forefront of Organic farming and is sharing its technology with its neighbors and with many other countries around the globe for years who are smart enough to benefit from Israel's expertise and knowledge.

Surely the over 17,000 members of the Park Slope Food Coop would be thrilled to learn about  Israel's innovation in agriculture and see how it can be applied elsewhere.

Surely the members of the Park Slope Food Coop would appreciate hearing how  Israel's hard work and perseverance paid off to make the Land of Israel fruitful and productive, by draining the swamps and removing the threat of malaria.  As this video shows Israel greatly increased their production by incorporating innovative organic methods to control  the pests that eat the produce.

Wise Recommendations for the benefit of the PSFC.....

Invite experts from Israel in the field of Organic Farming to address the members of the Food Coop at their General Meeting and write about it in the LinesWaiter Gazette.

Import Israeli products,  as many of their products are grown in greenhouses, bug free and free of pesticides.

IF the PSFC leadership wishes to be stubborn about it, and continue to bash Israel...

...THEN  they will have denied their 17,000 members  healthy, delicious, organic, pesticide free produce and nourish their members with poisonous lies and propaganda instead!

As a side note, BDS has a history of being counterproductive.

As soon as the boycotters realize how much they themselves need the products they choose to boycott, they find it very difficult to live without them and are forced to backtrack on their boycott.

In addition, those who love Israel and understands the holiness of the Land and the value of Israel,  will purposefully buy any product that BDS targets.

Exodus 1:12  But as much as they would afflict them, so did they multiply and so did they gain strength

This is a description of how the Israelites survived slavery in Egypt and in modern days how Sodastream has prospered since they were targeted by BDS.

So let us advocate that the leadership of the PSFC comes on board!
....ELSE let alternative open minded leadership take over the officers and committee heads in the  Park Slope Food Coop.

The time has come for the Coop to stop censoring Truth.  We owe it to the membership to stop the brainwashing that has been going on for over 8 years.  The time has come for members of the PSFC to start a competing newspaper to the Lineswaiter Gazette and organize reading groups that actually talk about Organic Farming rather than on distracting liberal, progressive nonsense.   Someone has to tell a narrative that can answer the Trump bashers and antisemites in the PSFC BDS who continuously spew a biased and false narrative.

At the very minimum, let all the brainwashing in the PSFC be reversed with educating the 17,000 members of the PSFC  with the truth about Israel and let the membership be made aware that they have been conned into believing a pack of lies about Israel. What shame!

Thank you Zo Artzeinu for sharing this video!

Zo Artzeinu writes:  Farmers in Israel have figured out how to have larger pests get rid of smaller pests (bugs) so that people can eat organic food without pesticides.

Check out this incredible film showing it in full detail. Make sure the sound is on and the volume turned up.  Published on Sep 3, 2013

Andrew Klavan’s brilliant analysis puts the ‘Fake News’ debate to rest – Israel Video Network and how Fake News has taken over PSFC

PSFC has been spreading fake news for over 8 years. This has manifested itself with a false narrative about Israel's unlawful Occupation of a fake Palestine, and an antiRepublican and more recently an anti Trump bias.  This is obvious from their newspaper The Lineswaiter Gazette, from their Reading workshops, in their biased Disciplinary Commitee and in their choice of Agenda Items in their monthly General Meetings!

Let me add that Fake News tells half a story leaving a significant portion of the events out of the narrative which puts the half they put out, totally out of context and biased.

Case in point calling a neutralized Islamo fascist  Palestinian terrorist a "victim of murder" and the IDF labelled as aggressers for attempting to defend itself....a right apparently only  permitted for the terrorists and not the innocent victims or potential victims.

The Park Slope Food Coop justifies Boycotting Israeli products and even keeps out Kosher products based on their fake news.

Listen to Andrew Klavan's 3 elements  that identifies fake news.   The PSFC is a an organization that preys on an ignorant and uneducated audienc"e to spread fakenews using these deceptive tacrht

Middle East and Terrorism: Why the Jews Are Losing the War on College Campuses - David Horowitz. PSFC take note!

The Park Slope Food Coop has allowed the brainwashing of these pro Hamas groups against Israel to infiltrate the Food Coop under their constant barrage of BDS misinformation in the Lineswaiter Gazette in their disciplinary committee in their reading workshops and in their General meetings.  This one sided narrative has been going on for 8 years since they are masters at suppressing the side of Israel shutting down the discussion, calling it divisive or political the minute they see that their false narrative might be exposed.

Deception is the key to their success. The lies are all packaged under their "concern" of common values, human rights violations against the "Palestinian people" (who educate their children to commit Jihad and glorify terrorists), and to protest aggression of the IDF (who dare to defend Israel from terrorists). They tell half the story bemoaning the Palestinian victims of Israel aggression while leaving out minor details like the fact that these victims happened to be terrorists or engaged in acts of terror.

AFDI: Today's protest on E. 42nd Street Protesters were given front row standing space to disrupt the speakers

I wanted to be close to the Podium of this Protest against Linda Sarsour..

Oops. I maybe accidentally went to a Protesters section of the Protest..or very close by   Next to me were loud protesters yelling Shut the F--- Up and other insults to the Speakers at the Podium behind their barricade.

I asked the police that they should move the protest to the protest so that we can hear the speakers. The policeman told me he couldn't hear what I was saying.

These protesters who were screaming "Go Home Fascists" and "Shut the F- Up" had the best standing room of the entire protest.  Everyone else was further back.

I was told that the Police's Legal team said that they couldn't move the protesters.  Apparently it didn't matter that they were drowning out the speakers. Legally they were protected!

Couldn't they go across the street to where the Neturei Karta were protesting.  It was very annoying and extremely provocative having them right up front to the point that they were clearly disrupting and distracting the ones on the Podium from speaking. For whatever reason, the loudspeaker was not loud enough to hear the speakers clearly from where I was standing which was very close to the podium. People way in the back apparently did hear better. There was too much loud disruptive and obscene protesting drowning out the speakers from my position. This was their intention and they succeeded.  Ok I didn't see them get actually physically violent but it was very stupid to allow them there. Verbally they were extremely abusive and physically potentially so..

Why is it that unrestrained freedom to Protest is legally given only to those that disrupt those that Protest for Israel?  Pro Sarsour, anti Israel, anti America, anti AFDI, anti Trump  who are a scary bunch gets legal protection to stand in close proximity....

I suppose that if the Police would have moved them they would have caused a riot.  Clearly a security threat!.

No other explanation....The anti Sarsour protester were on the street itself. At least part of it.

Why in heaven's name did the police give these Pro Sarsour space on the sidewalk in very close proximity to the podium? They also needed a large police force on the sidewalk to contain them? Couldn't the Police tell the protesters of the protest that the sidewalk is only for pedestrians?

The police were busy rushing the pedestrians who were walking down the street.  They wanted to make sure that the sidewalk remained passable as it was now one third of it's normal space,

After all, there was plenty of room across the Street adjacent to Neturei Karta protest.

My conclusion.

They have no problem putting Neturei Karta protesters,  across the street far away. Neturei Karta are docile and respectful to the police. They don't get violent. In fact, when Neturei Karta protesters were annoyed at a Jewish female wearing an IDF sweatshirt who was in their face they got the Police to protect them and she was almost arrested. That clearly shows that the Police can get really tough when needed especially when this women was holding an Israeli flag and and wearing an IDF sweatshirt and clearly provoking the Neturei Karta. I wonder if she was singing. That really would have been a provocation and could easily cause a confrontation.

PRO Sarsour  foul mouthed whistle blowers (they literally blow loud whistles to drown out the speaker)  are protected to do so, because according to the Police's legal advice they weren't doing anything wrong legally. We can't disrupt their freedom of speech to protest the protest.

Get this.  The police allowed a bunch of very foul mouthed pro Sarsour, anti Islamaphobic, anti Trump, and anti America protesters,  right next to the podium and in very close proximity to  Pamela Geller. The Police knew fully well that Pamela Geller and her speakers would talk negatively of Mohammad and Sharia.  This protest could potentially have gotten violent..

But probably the police were afraid. My guess is that they were intimidated.  Look carefully at the signs of the counter protest.

Signs at the counter protest of the anti Sarsour protest

Google and you get Check out their website.  Also Google

The signs read
"Smash Fascism and White Supremacy  PeoplesPowerAssemblies"
"Smash Racism and Islamaphobia"
They also chanted "From the River to the Sea Palestine Will be Free"....
"No KKK no Fascist USA"

Now it make sense.   The Police didn't want to be accused of being Islamaphobic and in so doing engage in Police Terror according to this crowd of protesters.  Police were intimidated to openly say that  this group of seasoned police protesters actually might be a physical threat to Pamela Geller  and her team.

Surely, the incident at the AFDI Mohammad cartoon contest and recent terror attacks across the globe in Manchester etc.  should have been sufficient reason to place them across the street.

Policed didn't even need any excuses as they commonly put protesters like Neturei Karta  across the street far away and keep the sidewalks free for pedestrians.

Another question to the Police Legal team is Isn't disrupting Freedom of Speech to Protest also illegal?

Thank G-d this time there was no Physical confrontation. We wouldn't want a repeat of  the violent confrontation in DC when Police tried to separate protesters and anti protesters..

Do you really want to wait for a physical confrontation to prove our point?.

Sadly, Linda Sarsour, an anti Semite, anti women and anti women's rights, pro Sharia and a Liar gets to speak at CUNY Commencement with probably lots of protection for her freedom of speech and Pamela Geller and Noni Darwish etc have no physical protection to speak of nor the freedom and protection to protest without serious disruption all because the other side are bullies and are legally protected.!

BDS Abuse of Freedom of Speech by CUNY City tax dollars paying for one who is an advocate and encourages terror to speak at the CUNY Commencement? Outrageous

CUNY invites  terror supporter and Jew hater Linda Sarsour to speak at Commencement?  She advocates for terrorists and calls little kids throwing rocks courageous! See her Twitter account.

Brandeiss suppresses Pro Israel supporters from speaking.

Both situations are  clearly abusing the 1st Amendment rights of Freedom of Speech.

#CancelSarsour: Assemblyman Hikand calls on NY Governor Cuomo to intervene, rescind this commencement invitation: "Sarsour's support for terrorism disqualifies her"
Brandeis University withdrew an invitation to brave Muslim apostate, Ayaan Hirsi Ali but terror supporter and vicious Jew-hater Linda Sarsour is invited to give the commencement address at CUNY? She should be in jail not on a podium says Congressman Dov Hikind.

Muslim Brotherhood Written Plan for North America influence on Park Slope Food Coop BDS (PSFCBDS) PSFC International Trade Education Squad ITES..More.Brainwashing disguised as Education?

Muslim Brotherhood Written Plan for North America. BDS supporters in Park Slope Food Coop (PSFC) and elsewhere follow this plan by vilifying Israel under the guise of freedom, democracy, equality etc. Who needs to hear facts?

Another opportunity to "Educate" or Brainwash?
Park Slope Food Coop International Trade Education Squad

Proposal: The PS Food Coop will form a International Trade Education Squad (ITES) to keep members informed about on-going international trade negotiations and how trade agreements affect our ability to maintain our values and realize the goals of the Park Slope Food Coop as put forward in our Mission Statement:
“We try to lead by example, educating ourselves and others about health and nutrition, cooperation and the environment…We seek to avoid products that depend upon the exploitation of others…We strive to reduce the impact of our lifestyles on the world we share with other species and future generations…”
Since the corporate mass media doesn’t inform us, many are confused about how international trade agreements affect our lives, our community and our Coop. To understand the process of how agreements are reached and the policies that trade agreements require that we accept, we agree to take responsibility to study and bring to Coop members information for discussion that can lead to individual and/or collective action.

I assume that this committee will probably have an anti Trump bias as is the case with the Lineswaiter Gazette. I think I am on target with this assumption. They probably have a socialist and progressive agenda.

I see that the purpose of ITES is to keep members informed as per Trade agreements and the Coops ability to maintain our values and realize the goals of the Mission Statement.

Och in Vey.

I really haven't studied what TPP is all about nor what has been presented in the ITES to form an educated opinion as per whether they are for or against TPP or even neutral and unbiased.  However what seems most suspect here is the mission statement that says that the COOP avoids products that depend on the exploitation of others. When it comes to BDS, the PSFC has determined wrongly that Israel is exploiting the rights of the Palestinians, stealing their land, violating their rights etc. when the violations are clearly the other way around.

Therefore why should anyone trust ITES values and judgement to educate in an unbiased fashion?  Even more worrisome, will they take the side of evil, misrepresent the facts with disinformation and bias and call it education as they have done with PSFC BDS  to clueless and uneducated members of the PSFC  like myself at least when it comes to Trade Agreements who will believe them?

Fwd: Kurtz Op-Ed: Understanding the Campus Free-Speech Crisis

Time to discipline progressive/leftists who are supportive of BDS and BDS operatives. The have a proven record of disruption.. not visa versa! This post brings proof of anti Israel and progressive leftists disrupting pro Israel speech from way back.

They must be disciplined as they have been quick to discipline the members of PSFC for protesting BDS....yes there is something we can learn from them....

We must not be afraid to disrupt and discourage a narrative based on hate and lies.

At the same time we must not be afraid and be proactive to encourage and protect free speech that is Pro Israel.

Once and for all let us abolish BDS propaganda and lies!

When will Pro Israel people have the same passion as anti Israel groups have had?

One day...stop with the violence, stop with the hate...

NEW YORK, April 14, 2017

By Stanley Kurtz

What's gone wrong on our college campuses and how can we fix it? This past week, Manhattan Institute scholar Heather Mac Donald, a knowledgeable supporter of America's criminal justice system and thoughtful critic of the Black Lives Matter movement, was repeatedly shouted down by protesters at UCLA, then silenced and forced to escape with a police escort the next day, during what should have been her talk at Claremont McKenna College.

These incidents follow the February riot that forced the cancellation of a Milo Yiannopoulos talk at UC Berkeley, and the March shout-down at Middlebury College of conservative Charles Murray, followed by the violent attack that sent Murray's liberal interlocutor, Professor Allison Stanger, to the hospital.

The immediate lesson of the UCLA shout-down and the Claremont shut-down is that widespread condemnation by all sides of the Berkeley and Middlebury incidents has not restored campus free speech. On the contrary, America's colleges continue their descent into low-grade anarchy.

Why is that? The immediate explanation is that leftist college students are furious at the election of Donald Trump as president. Yet often-illiberal demonstrations swept over the nation's campuses during the 2015–16 academic year, well before Trump became a factor. The crisis of free speech has also been aggravated by a rising tide of shout-downs and disruptions of pro-Israel speakers since 2014. Before that, I reported in 2013 on a few of the more egregious silencing incidents sparked by the campus fossil-fuel divestment movement, then in full swing. In fact, I began covering campus silencing incidents for NRO in 2001, when I wrote about angry UC Berkeley students storming the offices of the Daily Californian to destroy a run of papers containing a David Horowitz ad opposing reparations for slavery. Today's problems are hardly new.

Back in 2001, as reported by ABC News, thefts of campus newspapers had increased by 600 percent over the previous decade and campus speeches by former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, anti-preferences activist Ward Connerly, and Second Amendment supporter Charlton Heston were often disrupted or canceled. Here is a very partial excerpt from David Horowitz's description of his reception at various campuses in the early 2000s: "I once had to terminate a talk prematurely despite the presence of thirty armed police and four bodyguards at Berkeley. I had to be protected by twelve armed police and a German Shepard at the University of Michigan. I was rushed by clearly deranged individuals and saved only by the intervention of a bodyguard, twice — at M.I.T. and Princeton." (Sixteen years later, Horowitz has become the latest example of a campus free speech shut-down.)

A San Francisco Chronicle article from 2000 describes an incident at Berkeley in which 200 demonstrators broke through police barricades and blocked a talk by then-former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The incident was publicly condemned in a column by Berkeley mayor Shirley Dean and condemned as well in a joint letter by several members of the original Berkeley Free Speech Movement. These interventions by prestigious voices on the left were fueled by "cumulative frustration over several years of leftist demonstrations, particularly at the UC campus, disrupting speeches of those they view as criminal in one form or another." Targets of UC Berkeley disruptions stretching from the mid 1980s to the year 2000 included Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, and former NATO commander General Wesley Clark.

The first in this series of UC Berkeley speaker disruptions of the post-1960s era seems to have been the 1983 shout-down down of Ronald Reagan's United Nations ambassador, Jeane Kirkpatrick, by hecklers opposed to U.S. policy in El Salvador. Although her words were drowned out, Kirkpatrick went through the motions of reading her talk. Her follow-up Berkeley lecture was canceled, however. This incident, at a time when shout-downs were rare, sparked a national discussion and broad condemnation. Yet far from this condemnation preventing further disruptions, the virus quickly spread. Kirkpatrick was shouted down two weeks later at the University of Minnesota and her scheduled 1983 commencement address at Smith was canceled. The current era of campus shout-downs, shut-downs, and disinvitations had arrived. Yet the origins of this era lay still further back in time.

The campus disruptions of the 1960s and early 1970s set the pattern for all that was to follow from the mid 1980s onward. Most important for our purposes, Yale's Woodward Report of 1974, the classic defense of campus free speech, identified a series of shout-downs and disinvitations stretching back eleven years as the pattern that Yale would need to break. What the Woodward Report called Yale's "failures" began in 1963 when President Kingman Brewster, "in the interest of law and order" and in deference to New Haven's black community, canceled a scheduled talk by segregationist Alabama governor George C. Wallace at the height of the Civil Rights struggle.

Keep in mind that the report's chairman, Yale historian C. Vann Woodward, had advised Thurgood Marshall's legal team as it argued for school desegregation in what became the Brown vs. Board of Education decision of 1954. And Woodward's book, The Strange Case of Jim Crow, had been dubbed "the historical bible of the civil rights movement" by Martin Luther King Jr. himself. Yet this Civil Rights hero, along with other liberal faculty members at Yale, pressured President Brewster to defend the freedom of speakers such as George Wallace.

None of this is to deny that the problem of campus shout-downs and disinvitations is getting worse. Yet it's important to keep in mind that today's pattern is an intensification of a long-standing crisis that has had its ups and downs since the early Sixties, but has not fundamentally changed in form for well over five decades. What's clear after 50-some years is that the academy has proven itself incapable of solving its free-speech problem on its own. Let's see why.

We can think of the challenges to free-speech since the Sixties as washing over our campuses in four great waves. The first wave ("Young Radicals") was made up of the illiberal and violent Sixties student radicals. Notwithstanding the views of the Free Speech Movement veterans who condemned the Berkeley Netanyahu shut-down of 2000, a great many of the Sixties radicals rejected classical-liberal conceptions of freedom in favor of a neo-Marxist analysis. In this view, free speech and constitutional democracy are tools used by the ruling class to suppress dissent and protect an oppressive society.

The second anti–free-speech wave ("Long March") hit colleges in the early-to-mid 1980s, as the radicals left graduate school and took up junior faculty positions, bringing their suspicions of free speech with them. These faculty did away with required Western Civilization courses as well, helping to launch the academic "culture war" that began at Stanford in 1987. After allied leftist faculty and students succeeded in abolishing Stanford's Western Civilization requirement in 1988, student demonstrators began demanding speech codes (partly in hopes of silencing students who had challenged them during the Western Civilization debate)

The third anti–free-speech wave ("Takeover") began in the mid 1990s, as the older generation of professors began to retire. At this point, the younger and more radical generation of faculty members reached critical mass. That is, they had the numbers to control hiring. Not believing in the classical-liberal vision of a marketplace of ideas, these faculty used the tenure system, not to seek out and protect the finest scholarly representatives of diverse perspectives, but to solidify an intellectual monopoly of the Left. By the 2000s, the tenured radicals constituted a controlling majority in many social science and humanities departments, and stood as the most powerful plurality in the university as a whole.

The fourth anti–free-speech wave ("Transformed Generation") consists of the late Millennial students who began demanding safe-spaces and trigger warnings around 2014, just as the number of university shout-downs and disinvitations began to spike. Free-speech advocate Gregg Lukianoff and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt attribute the new student sensitivities, in part, to parental coddling by the Baby Boomers. No doubt there is truth to this, but this college generation's K–12 curriculum also differed dramatically from past standards.

Although Lynne Cheney, former National Endowment for the Humanities chairwoman under Presidents Reagan and George H. W. Bush, managed to convince the U.S. Senate to condemn the proposed new multiculturalist National History Standards of 1994, the left-leaning post-Sixties generation of K–12 teachers adopted them in practice anyway. The rest of the curriculum was also quickly remodeled along lines that stressed group conflict and America's sins. The generation that brought us "micro-aggressions" and "white privilege" duly entered college 20 years later.

The key to solving the campus free-speech crisis lies in the decade-long interregnum between the radical Sixties and the kick-off of the campus culture wars in the mid 1980s. This was also a period of relative calm in the country as a whole.

The widely praised Woodward Report of 1974 marked the effective end of the Young Radicals phase (wave one), and ushered in the decade-long restoration of campus free speech. That restoration ended with the Jeane Kirkpatrick shout-down at Berkeley in 1983, which initiated the second wave of free-speech crisis.

What distinguished the Woodward Report of 1974 from Berkeley's response to the Kirkpatrick shout-down of 1983 was the issue of discipline. The Woodward Report not only eloquently upheld the principle of free speech, it insisted that students who shouted down visiting speakers must be disciplined. The Woodward Report also established a sanctions policy, and a system for warning disruptive students of potential disciplinary consequences. This approach carried the day at Yale and elsewhere during the post-Sixties restoration of free speech. In effect, the Woodward Report and its positive national reception helped return the credible threat of discipline for speaker shout-downs that had been abandoned by craven administrators during the 1960s.

A decade after the Woodward Report, things changed. While the Berkeley faculty as a whole condemned the students who shouted down Jeane Kirkpatrick in 1983, a faculty resolution to have Kirkpatrick's hecklers punished was defeated. This was likely a concession to the many junior faculty who openly defended Kirkpatrick's disruptors on the grounds that "oppressors" have no free-speech rights. Although many observers felt that disciplinary action against Kirkpatrick's hecklers had to be taken, the UC Board of Regents also declined to follow up on a demand for discipline initiated by Regents' chairman Glenn Campbell. Meanwhile, UC Berkeley chancellor Ira Heyman indicated that no disciplinary action would be taken.

With more leftist faculty streaming in over succeeding years, those who favored discipline for disruptors grew less powerful. The days when even (or especially) liberal Civil Rights heroes understood the need to grant free speech to segregationists were over. The policy of disciplinary sanctions for shout-downs instituted to national praise by Yale in 1974, definitively went by the boards at Berkeley in 1983. Speaker disruptions then slowly grew in frequency and force at Berkeley and beyond. So, the refusal to discipline the students who shouted down Kirkpatrick ultimately helped lock today's quasi-anarchic anti-speech system into place.

The thuggishness and violence of the Sixties demonstrations at their height exceeded what we see today. Yet today's chronic, pervasive, and steadily growing vice-grip of campus orthodoxy, punctuated and enforced by occasional shout-downs and meeting takeovers, is in its way more dangerous.

There are plenty of indications that campus free speech is more besieged nowadays than it's been in decades. Trigger warnings, safe spaces, and microaggressions signal a cultural sea-change. Anti-Israel shout-downs and disruptions have multiplied dramatically. These are no longer occasional embarrassing episodes but the fruit of a deliberate strategy devised by influential sectors of the campus left. FIRE (the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education), which keeps an index of disinvitations and shout-downs, says the overall rate of all such incidents is increasing.

Yet statistics tell only part of the story. We can't assume a constant rate of speakers attempting to counter campus orthodoxies. Top comedians and an unknowable number of conservative speakers now avoid college campuses. At some point, a decreasing rate of shout-downs may actually indicate that free speech, along with resistance to campus orthodoxies, has been successfully crushed. And in a world of social media and the 24-hour news cycle, a few well-publicized shout-downs may suffice to chill speech and encourage violent demonstrators across the entire country. Finally, in contrast to the Sixties, today's illiberal demonstrators, disruptive and ornery though they may seem, may actually be allied with significant sections of the faculty and administration (as KC Johnson has cogently argued).

So there are important reasons to believe that today's free-speech crisis is locked-in and unchangeable in the absence of outside intervention. The alliance of radical students with dominant sections of the faculty (precisely those faculty members who reject classical liberalism) means that few C. Vann Woodwards remain to pressure administrators into defending free speech. Meanwhile, the ideologically based "studies" programs (various ethnic studies, women's studies, and environmental studies majors) have grown to challenge the conventional academic departments in size and influence. This creates a large and permanent faculty and student constituency schooled in suspicion of classic liberalism.

Ultimately, the public has granted the academy certain rights and privileges — special financial and policy protections (especially tenure) — on the understanding that institutions of higher education will pursue truth under conditions of free inquiry and fairness to all points of view. There is a kind of implicit bargain or social contract here, and the academy has so consistently and persistently violated its side of the bargain that public action is now necessary.

In particular, the tenure system, designed to ensure freedom of speech and secure the marketplace of ideas, has been abused to create an illiberal intellectual monopoly. And precisely because of this monopolistic abuse of the unique privilege of academic tenure, along with the unresolved, decades-long crisis of campus free speech, the traditional policy presumption in favor of local control can no longer be sustained in this sector.

That is why state and federal legislators cannot look the other way but must act to restore our most basic liberties to the academy. And while legislation eliminating restrictive speech codes and so-called free-speech zones is very much in order, the underlying problem will not be solved until administrators are pressed to restore discipline for speaker shout-downs. The administrative refusal to discipline disruptors, which took off in the Sixties and resumed with the Kirkpatrick incident in 1983, must be reversed. Only a return to the policies and ethos of the Woodward Report offers hope.

There are several state-level campus free-speech bills on offer, but only the model legislation proposed in the Goldwater Report systematically addresses the problem of discipline for campus shout-downs. I have also offered a plan to tie federal aid to higher education to a restoration of discipline for speaker shout-downs, among other things.

The tattered campus climate of free speech ultimately rests on deeper cultural shifts that must be addressed by educators over the long-term. Yet legislative action to protect campus free speech could serve as the shock that initiates cultural change.

Short of legislative steps to restore discipline for disruption, even bipartisan condemnation of campus shout-downs will fail, as it has failed repeatedly in the past. The ranks of authentically liberal faculty members are far too thinned to do what Woodward and his colleagues did in 1974. Without an intervention by the public through its elected representatives, the structure of the anti-free-speech university is locked-in for the foreseeable future. After 54 years, we are indeed at an inflection point. Act now, or campus free speech will be lost for a lifetime.
